Papa Bear doesnt know the new Toporama Web Map Service from The Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN). Lets then present it.
NRCAN has introduced in may the Toporama WMS service. This gives access to the new CANTOPO, the new generation of Topographic Maps (1 / 50 000) produced by NRCAN. Theses maps are in vector format. The availability of this new vector format for canadian topo maps gives us more precision and clarity as compared to the old Raster Maps format who where a scan of the Paper Maps. Texts describing rivers and local points of interest do not anymore collapse when zooming to lower levels. The map is also of higher quality at higher zoom level. And the information shown on the maps is adapted to the zoom levels. This new service is described on the Geogratis site of NRCAN : http://www.geogratis.gc.ca/geogratis/en/service/toporama.html . The topographic data is offered in 16 different layers. It is also possible to select simultaneously all the layers (layers=WMS- Toporama). For the time being, the access to the new server is a lot faster then on the older one. To add the Toporama MapType to the Google Map API, we use the WMSCreateMap function from Jef Poskanzer's Acme Mapper (http://mapper.acme.com/). The Toporama server is accessed at http://wms.sst-sw.rncan.gc.ca/wms/toporama_en. The layer WMS-Toporama is specified. Note also that zoom levels are restricted between 11 and 15, since these are the only levels accessible through Toporama WMS Service. var NRCAN_TOPORAMA_A = WMSCreateMap('TOPO Vector Map','<a href="http:// www.geogratis.gc.ca/geogratis/en/licence.jsp">© Department of Natural Resources Canada</a> - <a href="http://cartes.nrcan.gc.ca/topo101/ symbols_e.php">Description of symbols</a>','http://wms.sst- sw.rncan.gc.ca/wms/toporama_en', 'WMS-Toporama', 11, 15, 't' ); The following link gives acces to a Sample Toporama Map through Google Map API v2 application. http://www.clubmontagnecanadien.qc.ca/sentier/toporama.htm Pierre On 1 sep, 08:47, Papa Bear <[email protected]> wrote: > Those map tiles are served by 3rd party services, in particular the > USGS tiles are served by the Terraserver and are available for the US > only.
