For the purpose of this particular error, both the live server and the
dev server had the exact same HTML file. The difference was in the
included JS file, the dev server had an extra comma whereas the live
server did not. However, the problem existed on both machines,
regardless of that comma. Granted, IE would've failed miserably with
the comma too ... but since it didn't exist on the live server, I
figured it had to be something else. And it was ... keep reading.

I did. It's what I gave you in my previous post. The file is on both
machines, and it behaves exactly the same way.

However, I discovered it had to do with SharePoint on the live server
and the way the page was getting included into the master template.
That problem has now been address (and the template reworked) so now
the alert() popups DO work in IE with the 'Compatible' meta tag
enabled. My dev server runs Apache ... I have no control over the
live server, so, like coffee, I have to go through a big white filter
to make things work.

Got it.

That's a default signature on my phone, so that people I reply to
using their personal address, know not to reply using my gmail
address, but my work address. For the Group's purpose, it means
nothing. E-Mail to my gmail account flows into my regular box
anyway. Perhaps a rewrite of my signature is in order ...

Thanks for the help Andrew! Much appreciated.

Now onto finding out how to add a custom (HTML) popup to a
Polyline ... oh the joys.
