Unfortunately, I think the program that creates the images does not
support creating PNGs with more than one transparent RGB color. I was
hoping there would be a way to control it within Google Maps itself. I
suppose there might be a way to run that output into another program
to make that happen...

Mike, do you have or know of any examples of a Google Map API instance
with a semi-transparent PNG for a GGroundOverlay? I would be very
interested in seeing a test case, so that I have a better idea of what
to expect.
