Hi Andrew,

        Thank you for your reply.

> You haven't said anything about your server environment: is this a
Windows server?

I am running on a server provided by Hostway.com under their "Gold
Windows 2003" plan, which I suppose means that it is operating under Windows
Server 2003.

> It's definitely not a Maps problem

The reason I raised the issue here is that aside from the problem
arising after I started using the Maps API, I found out that I'm not the
only person for whom that is the case
(http://marc.info/?l=php-general&m=125139905826633&w=2). I've also written
to the author of that post to see if he figured it out.

His post was just two months ago. If he and I have both had this
problem recently, I was hoping I might find someone here who has seen the
problem and knows what to do about it.

That search was the first thing I did when the problem first
occurred. All the hits I found talked about the error message being due to a
bug in PHP. If that is the case, then I need to find a way to work around
the bug. I didn't find anything like that and if that's what I need, I hope
to get it from my posting on the PHP mailing list.

But I'm not willing to assume immediately that the error message is
due to such a bug without first determining that it is not flagging a
legitimate problem in the operation of my code. Unfortunately, I have found
no documentation of the legitimate meaning of the access violation error and
how to resolve it. I searched the PHP documentation without finding
anything. Then I even searched the source code, where I found this error
message, but it was triggered by a condition that I was not able to find
further information about. Again, I'm hoping the PHP mailing list can help
with this.

> one solution is to reinstall PHP

That's not a solution that is available to me, unless Hostway
determines from my support request that it is required. It's also not a
solution that is practical to use every time the error starts appearing. If
I could show Hostway documentation that doing a reinstallation one time
would prevent the problem from recurring, maybe they'd be willing to do it,
but I haven't seen anything like that.
