This is exactly what I was saying. If you read the first post you'll
see that the question is why is it working on sites I've done
previously using this code (js and ee together) but not on in this
instance.

The EE code renders fine. This is not an EE issue. That article was
saying that if you broke line in an if statement such as:

{if bob == "cool" AND mary == "awesome"
AND joe == "totally awesome"}

Then there would be a problem. But regular EE blocks look like this:

{exp:weblog:entries weblog="members" dynamic="off"}
{variable}
{/exp:weblog:entries}

There is no need for a line break, nor did I put one in. If you need
proof that I know what I'm doing in EE, go to the forums
http://expressionengine.com/forums/ my username is ImpGabe you can
look me up. I have even helped some folks in this very subject of
using EE with Google maps api. I have also contributed to the EE
documentation.

At any rate, I fixed the problem and it had nothing to do with EE. It
was some kind of formatting error which admittedly I still don't quite
understand.
