You should maybe use Mapstraction on top of OpenLayers. That way you can switch to Google Maps at the Mapstraction level, which uses the *native* Google Maps API.
Mapstraction is likely better as it always uses the native API where possible. Layers that don't have a native 'Maps API' can still use OpenLayers to do the rendering. (OpenLayers can load layers from various provider, but as noted as it bypasses the API, it doesnt always have good results.
