GDirections will snap to the nearest point on a drivable road as long as
that road point is within 5 kilometres. Since pedestrian zones are
typically less than 5km across, expect GDirections to succeed.

See: http://econym.org.uk/gmap/example_snap.htm

So you'll always have to check the distance from your point to the point
returned by GDirections, and have a cutoff where you choose to consider
the point not accessible by car.

Even then it's not foolproof. On that example map, the roads through the
caravan park just to the east of the smaller roundabout are actually
accessible by car, but they're not included in the GDirections database.
Similarly, you can get false results if the point is only a few metres
from a road but there's some sort of impenetrable barrier in the way.
