3D allows things to fade on and off easier when you approach them.... there
are even some complex controls in kml where you can explicitly control that
type of thing... but in 2D?

You can give it a title so when somebody hovers on it they get the info or
you can have them click the other is just to heavy.

Elabels could be geared to only display within certain zoom levels and maybe
within a certain pixel reach of your cursor or something similar... not a
generic solution/... and to me that later bit is the point.
