It can almost certainly be done; most things are possible, somehow,
even if it takes a bit of work. However it *is* against the TOS (See
5.2 and 10.14(n)).

Version 3 is a lightweight API specifically aimed at mobile platforms.
As such, it has pared down the amount of data transferred for the API
to the absolute minimum; presumably this has also included the 86
bytes of the key and any associated client-side code for its
verification.

You may be right to avoid Version 3 at the moment, as it's entirely
possible for Google change even documented functions (and that has
already happened at least once).
