The best way to handle too many markers on a map is to skip markers
altogether and use a tile overlay.

Here's one I did recently:

http://www.usnaviguide.com/volcano.htm

This one uses a combination of a tile layer to show all the volcanoes
in the world and a KMZ from the Smithsonian to show ones that are
currently "interesting." There are about 1500 volcanoes showing on
this map and currently 14 interesting ones. The zoom levels are from 4
to 9.
