No worries, if the localhost hack works well for you because you're dedicating a machine to it, then go for it.
My note of alarm was really directed more toward anyone who might read the thread and think it's a good general purpose solution. In most cases an API key switcher like the one I posted is a better way to deal with this. It isn't hard to set up - less time than it's taken us to talk about it :-) and it supports multiple test servers without any special configuration on the client. Also don't forget my comment about redirecting your users to the www. version of your site URL. This is really worth doing. Do you use Apache?
