If you want speed, you would be much better getting your points in as
JSON data. It's much faster to process versus XML.

As far as placing the points go, use the markerlight or other marker
classes. They are much faster than the built in marker class.
You can see my own highly modified and simplified version of the
MarkerLight code in operation here:

I can add about 20,000 markers on a modern PC using Google Chrome or
the latest Firefox browser, and about 5000 on IE (but horribly load
times)

Put a 'please wait..loading...' type animation up while you are
loading.  I recommend loading the markers which are on-screen, then
adding the rest on-demand, as needed. That will keep wait times down.

My client does sometimes display as many as 4000 markers on screen,
but speed is horrible on slower PC's using older browsers.
