Do check the Terms of Service, particularly 9.1, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.5, 10.9, 10.12 (other sections may also be relevant). Your proposed application may be contrary to all those sections. Directions are *only* available using Javascript within the API (so the blog posting is advertising how to break the Terms) and you must either show the route on a map, or show the directions text, or both.
