It's rather unlikely, given the existing GGeoXml tool and the
available open-source alternatives.

Can you name at least one open source alternative? As far as i know GGeoXml uses the same overlay methods as GPolyline, GPolygon, GMarker, etc... so it will not boost performance like KmlLayer (which uses static images from what i've seen).
