I believe you will run afoul of the terms for Google maps by doing this. Driving directions between Zip Codes is not going to be very accurate or useful. You might consider using straight line distance using the Haversine formula. You could compute your distances a lot easier and all you would need to do is get the centroids of your zip codes.
