You need to read a bit further ...
Static Maps v2 doesn't need a key, but that isn't the only change.
Just removing the key from an old-style v1 URL may not work, you may
have to make other changes

Worked for me in FF2 (well sort of, I got a map of 60 miles away).
After the first visit or refresh, no further map. Looks like some
timing issue.
