The actual driving distance is given in the XML. Note that it's only permissible to use "new GDirections()" with no map or panel if you do something yourself. Directions must be shown on a map or in a panel, or both. You can't just use the data without a map or a panel. Citing Mike's example was to give an example of how to do multiple calls to a rate-limited asynchronous service, which is what you are doing. What you do with the data returned is up to you, within the Terms.
