Those results sound like they are from the local search API not the
geocoder.

I think when you say JSON, you mean the geocoder (whose JSON formated
results you happen to be using).

No.  It is described in the documentation:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/v2/reference.html#GGeoAddressAccuracy
