It's objecting to the data starting <o~ because < indicates an element
name follows, and you can't have ~ in an element name. Does the data
really start with < ? What are you using to encode it?

That's where Firebug comes in handy: it can show exactly what the page
has fetched. My page has to use a proxy script because the data is
located on another server, here:
