You guys are a life saver.and a sanity saver!  That 1 equal sign is what was
throwing me off!  It now works as I intended in BOTH Firefox and IE8.  Thank
you so much!  This is my first major project (major for me) doing it all in
Notepad.

sets checked equal to true and always evaluates to true, it should be:
if (checked == true)

 

I didn't look at the context of this code at all, but just a general
comment: Unless you really need to check for the specific value 'true', it's
generally better to omit the comparison entirely:

 

    if( checked ) {

        // do something

    }
