I've shed many tears over this too but I learned programming at the C:
prompt on a black screen and white text (ages ago) and doing this with
Notepad helps give me a thorough understanding of how the code really works
and why it does what it does. This WILL BE MY LAST TIME USING NOTEPAD! J
Thanks again for the help.all of you! Here is the final product:

NOTEPAD?!?!?

My friend, you bring tears to my eyes, and not the good kind.

Do yourself a big favor and get a decent editor. There are plenty of free
ones that will do a MUCH better job for you than Notepad.

I recommend Komodo Edit:

http://www.activestate.com/komodo-edit

I use the commercial version, Komodo IDE:

http://www.activestate.com/komodo-ide

But the free Komodo Edit version would be a *huge* improvement over Notepad.
For one thing, it checks the syntax of your code while you edit it, and it
would have given a warning about the "if(foo=true)" statement. (It's not a
syntax error, but it does trigger a warning because it is so often a
mistake.)

Go try it now and you will see the difference right away.

You guys are a life saver.and a sanity saver! That 1 equal sign is what was
throwing me off! It now works as I intended in BOTH Firefox and IE8. Thank
you so much! This is my first major project (major for me) doing it all in
Notepad.

if (checked = true)

sets checked equal to true and always evaluates to true, it should be:
if (checked == true)

I didn't look at the context of this code at all, but just a general
comment: Unless you really need to check for the specific value 'true', it's
generally better to omit the comparison entirely:

    if( checked ) {

        // do something

    }
