   I want to preface by saying that I am new to java script and the
Google maps api. I have been tasked with updating an existing site and
will appreciate any help from the group.

   My Maps API contains several different layers which consist of
colour coded elevations. Each layer is the same area but with a
different colour scale. I currently have a static .png anchored on the
left side of the image which corresponds to one of the layers. What I
need to do is set it up so that this image changes depending on which
layer is selected.

   I tried setting up a series of if loops to try and identify which
map type is displayed but I'm not sure which variable to test against
