Problem solved! 

Finally discovered the problem of why my maps won't display. And why most 
Google Pages are generating javascript errors

It seems that for some reason the ISP for this locale has (in its infinite 
wisdom) decided to block all access to whatever you want to call 
it...applets, java or .js files. I guess they believe that they are harmful 
and a security issue. I discovered this when someone told me that their 
computer was displaying the map and that the problem must be with my 
computer. I used UltraSurf to access a known map page and was absolutely 
stunned when the map appeared. 

This is absolutely insane.
