Don, We’ve found that HTTPS is of greatest benefit to our Premier customers. For example, the vast majority of https use cases are for Maps API Premier, such as when it is used internally or for a paid application. Offering HTTPS for the standard API raises some challenges such as facilitating abuse that we work with our data provider partners to reduce. We need to strike a balance, and appreciate your feedback as it helps us set our priorities for the API. For qualified nonprofits that need SSL and other Premier features, Google offers grants for social impact uses of Maps API Premier (see Google Earth Outreach - http://earth.google.com/outreach/index.html).
