I'm thinking the location needs to be near a routable path. On 'maps.google.com', I dropped a start location in the middle of Lake Michigan and tried to route to my house. It told me "We could not calculate directions". I did the same from the middle of a forest preserve and a cemetery, it gave me the same message. How "near" a path it needs to be, I don't know. I think only Google can answer that one.
