I don't see anything that implies you wouldn't be able to do this, so long 
as you register with the server-side app instead of an installed app. I 
noticed that in my install application API Access on the Google APIs 
Console, it lists both the special string as well as localhost, so maybe you 
can listen on a localhost port as well. 

I haven't tried it. I'm just looking here:

 Maybe I'll try to cook one up later.
