I don't exactly know the answer to this, but the fact that you're disconnecting your XMPP client means that your status (presence) is changing. Presence is tied to a complete JID, which includes the node information. I guess certain presence states have certain priorities, so when you set your presence in your client, that becomes your status, as far as everyone else is concerned. However, when you log out of your client, your presence reverts to whatever has priority from any other nodes that are currently logged in with your id (and I'm guessing that the gmail chat window is still considered to be "logged in").
