I've run into those same issues and was able to get by the updating
issue by using the theme manager gadget here:
http://www.google.com/ig/directory?type=gadgets&url=gad.getpla.net/theme_mgr/theme_mgr.xml.
Clearing the cache on the theme seems to make the chat thing update
more quickly.  You have to go into the preferences and set it to
developer mode.

The colors on the buttons are a problem.  I don't see any way to
change those from the api documentation.  I think the chat box was
considered too buggy even for the public beta.  Outside the sandbox,
it doesn't appear for me.  Even when it works, I can't quite figure
out what the intended workflow might be.  It seems strange that the
chat thing would be in a homepage because I don't tend to remain
located on the home page all day long, but I would like to receive
chats from people that are trying to talk to me.  Maybe it has
something to do with what Google is doing in the social network area
and some other things are going to plug into it.  Just speculating at
this point.
