Thanks for the responses. It took have a dozen tries, but I think the submission finally took.
The FAQs are very useful-- sorry I did not notice them earlier, but I searched through the themes guidelines again and again and I couldn't find anything that explained my problem. If it's such a common it would be nice to have it addressed on http://code.google.com/apis/themes/docs/dev_guide.html so people can resolve it more readily. Also I do resent the notion that people are asking "stupid" questions. Not everyone is so computer savy and isn't that the whole point of this group is to resolve problems and help each other out.
