For sure there's a really way as not as u describe :

Get simply the very good and basically Google theme example here :
http://gadget-doc-examples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/themes/themes_template.zip

and just modify the xml file with image's url in :

<Attribute name="header.center_image.url">http://.... if u want your
img centered

or

<Attribute name="header.tile_image.url">http://.... if u want it fit
horizontaly...
