I've now tried theme maker uploading a larger image, the original of
the one I tried before. The uploaded size was 3733 x 745 px.

I used the cropping tool to select the full width of my uploaded
image, and cropped about 20% off the top.

Theme maker has taken the full width of the image and SCALED it down
to 1600 px. It has then CROPPED the bottom to an overall height of 167
px. I could understand the 1600 px width limitation, as that was a
standard display resolution before 1680, 1920, etc. But why limit the
height to 167 px when there was enough of the image to acheive the
full 175 px?

So, although my cropped image was 3733 x 600 px, far larger than the
1680 x 175 I was hoping for, theme maker still limited it to 1600 x
167 px.

Since it doesn't look like theme maker is able to produce a header
image for 1680 px widescreens and 175 px headers, let alone the larger
1920 px widescreen displays, I'll give theme maker a miss from now on
and stick to XML.
