So I was trying to verify my translation of a phrase from Japanese to
English last night and it just returned my original phrase. So then I
tried simple words, and they all returned just the original word!

I tried:

1. onna (should be woman, at least)
2. kuma (should be bear, at least)
3. kudasai (should be please, at least)
4. biru (should be building, at least)
5. biiru (should be beer, at least)
6. sake (should be salmon or rice wine, or?)
many many others

I'm not a Japanese language expert but I had three years in high
school and I know hiragana, katakana, and some kanji... so I know
I've at least hit on a few REAL Japanese words (in romaji).

Both Google Translate and Babelfish seem to not be able to translate
my Japanese words to English. What am I doing wrong / what is going
on??? Very confused...

If it doesn't work with my Firefox or Mac, Google should fix
that. :) That isn't very Google-like. As for Babelfish, I realize
this is not the forum for that but I mentioned it because I thought it
was interesting that it behaved the same way.

Does it only accept JIS input or something? Am I going to have to
write these in kana / kanji to actually translate them? That seems
like a real bummer for people that are learning basic Japanese, etc.
