Hi everyone, I love using Google translate as a quick online dictionary to help me puzzle through Spanish and Russian or to help me look up the spellings of things I already know how to say (I'm a terrible speller in every language I speak), but since I'm a girl and the translator assumes any "I" statements are made by a boy, my re-gendering of sentence is sometimes less than correct. I think an awesome addition to Google Translate would be to add an optional set of radio buttons where you could indicate if a statement is coming from a man or a woman so that all conjugations and declensions relating to "I/me/myself" would come up in the desired gender.
For example, if I want to say in Russian that I read Bulgakov's fantastic novel The_Master_and_Margarita, the translation given to me is: Я читал Мастер_и_Маргарита. And only from my own study of Russian do I know that it should be like this instead, because I am a woman: Я читала Мастер_и_Маргарита. A quick click of a radio button could avert this simple and other more complex "what is the speaker's gender?" issues. Thanks for listening! .:Zabet -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "General" group. To post to this group, send email to [email protected].
