I would like to add a comment to this discussion. As a Brazilian user, as well as someone who actually works in the field of linguistics, I must object to the remarks that the output generated by Google Translate is Brazilian Portuguese. As a matter of fact, both varieties of the Portuguese language are totally mixed up in this translation engine. As a result, the output is neither European nor Brazilian Portuguese, but a strange (and often unintelligible) mixture of the two. Here is an example. I have typed the sentence below in the source language field: After you type your surname here, the operating system will finish the installation. The resulting translation was: Depois de digitar o seu apelido aqui, o sistema operacional irá concluir a instalação. There are a few problems with this translation, but I would just like to mention that "apelido" is the translation for "surname" in Portugal, not in Brazil (and this, in itself, would be enough to make the sentence ambiguous and misleading, since the meaning of "apelido" in Brazil is "nickname"). In addition, "sistema operacional" is the translation for "operating system" in Brazil, not in Portugal. The system produces this kind of hybrid translation all the time, also mixing up different spellings. As a result, Google translate is not reliable for Brazilian nor Portuguese users. As for the voice used to read the translations, it doesn't alwars sound like Brazilian Portuguese. Some of the words sound more like European than Brazilian Portuguese, and regardless of the pronunciation, the words are not always intelligible, so this cannot be considered a reliable feature either. Google Translate, please take our comments into account in order to improve your MT system!
