I love Google translate. It is exceedingly useful and has helped me a lot, since I am doing a study of Europe and have thus far been forced to translate passages from 11 European languages. As I say, it is a wonderful tool and I applaud whomever created it.
However, I notice that certain languages work better than others. When translated into English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese work fairly well. But Latin, Finnish, Norwegian, Estonian, and a few others provide rather poor translations-sometimes it is impossible to tell what is being translated. Many words seem to be missing from these languages (particularly older or less-commonly used words) and the syntax of the translation is often incomprehensible. Since I am translating from a good many books published prior to 1900, this makes my task rather difficult. If I were to make a suggestion, I would try finding a person both fluent and well-read in both a language (Lithuanian, Latin, Norwegian, etc) and English (or any other language needing translation) to look over your program and fix the problems. A native speaker would naturally be able to spot syntax errors and would be more likely to know words missing from a standard Finnish to English or Latin to English dictionary. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "General" group.
