If you're on a mac, I recommend just turning on the built in pinyin input
system that is available within system preferences
Open up the System preferences app go to Language & Text, then click on the
button at the top that says Input Sources, scroll down to Chinese and click
the check box for Pinyin - Simplified. Once you have it enabled, you can
switch to and from English input and Chinese input.

If you're on windows, Google has their own pinyin input system, and I'm
pretty sure it works just like all other systems
http://www.google.com/ime/
go to the link and click on simplified Chinese, at this point it will be in
Chinese, so just click the download link. The page will show you a little
bit about how it works, and lucky for you, it works just like Google
translate's pinyin input.

When typing in pinyin a "buffer" will display, this is the pop-up box that
shows what characters you have entered pinyin for. Simply click on the
character you want, and it will be placed into the text area. for Google's
input method, just use the left and right arrow keys to select different
characters, and use up and down arrow keys to move to the next page of
characters.
