There _is_ something odd going on.

'a secret garden' translates correctly as 'ein geheimer Garten'

'A secret garden' (note the capital A) translates as 'Eine geheime Garten'

For the definite article it doesn't matter whether it's 'the' or 'The' ... 
the translation is correct.

'a naughty pig' => 'ein freches Schwein'
'A naughty pig' => 'Eine freche Schwein'
'the naughty pig' => 'die freche Schwein'
'The naughty pig' => 'Der freche Schwein'
