I've just had the same problem.  It's very confusing.  There is only the 
USA and Belize who use the MMDD format - basically the rest of the world 
uses a different format.  That includes the UK, Ireland, South Africa, 
Australia, India and a host of other English speaking countries, so it's 
not making it easier for native speakers.  Surely the principle should be 
don't translate / change unless you have to.
