One good test for machine translation is in my opinion how well it handles the translation of proverbs. If you try to translate a few ones, you will quickly find that often a meaningless translation comes back. The number of proverbs in each language is typically limited, though it may be high. They also typically rely much more on semantics / concepts (incl. local cultural variations) than on straight word mapping, and they present quite a few challenges as to the word order, because often proverbs try to rime, in order to enhance recall. Maybe Google could incorporate a list of proverbs and metaphors in a number of languages? (Of course we can al add individual translations, but I guess Google might jump start the process by loading a number of known proverds from electronic dictionaries or so).
