The next version will actually contain the fix for allowing arbitrary IDs, so that won't be a worry. I completely understand your concern, and unfortunately I can't address it without pushing a new version, which may be a month or so away.
US metros are actually 'special' in the code. They're explicitly whitelisted, and I believe it has to be of the format /\d\d\d/ (three digits in a row).
