Hi Edward, I'm a big fan of your books, and we'd be happy to take your suggestions into consideration as we contemplate our upcoming redesign of Google Charts. Do you have specific recommendations?
I understand that you don't like 3D pie charts. We don't either, which is why they're not the default. (Pie charts, in general, are overused.) But we also have millions of users, many of whom like the visual bling even though it adds no useful information content. We often have internal debates about how much to give users what they want, even if what they want is a flawed visualization. At one end of the spectrum, we could create a system that constrains users heavily, at the risk of customization and expressivity. Every chart would be beautiful, but there wouldn't be many of them. At the other end, we could have Google Charts be more like a programming language, where users can do anything they want, but many of the resulting charts would fall short of the ideals that you hold -- and I would like to think, Google as well.
