I had hoped for the same thing as you did because I was finally able
to get my desired username on the wave sandbox :)

But see it the other way around. Imagine you had gotten your desired
username a long time ago with GMail. And then Google would let someone
else take it over through Wave, you'd not be happy if you then had to
create a new Google Account just for Google Wave. Like it's now, it's
first come first served, which is fair. You can't make everyone happy.
The good thing about this is that you've got just one account for
everything Google now (Youtube, Wave, GMail, App Engine, ..) and don't
need to remember a different username/password for each service. I
guess this also makes it easier for Google since they solved the email
problem with this now. Email goes to @gmail, waves to @googlewave. No
email spamming your Wave inbox.

Did you try thinking of a completely new name? Google wrote that you
can just create a new GMail account and use this new gmail account
with Wave if you want a different username. I couldn't think of
anything (plus me being lazy) so I just went with my old GMail
account.

At the very least, I read that Google plans to let the sandbox
accounts open for quite a while (maybe even forever but they didn't
say that) with bleeding edge updates and the handy debug tool for
developing, which means that there at least you will be able to
continue to use your desired username while developing extensions for
Wave or talking to other developers.
