Hi Betty,

This was a product decision that we discussed for quite some time, and
did not make lightly. In the end, we thought there was more benefit
for users in being able to access all Google products with one
password and one public identity. By having a new namespace, we'd be
asking users to remember yet another username and password, and also
having to communicate a whole new user name to friends and family.
There are other benefits to using the gmail namespace too: users can
carry gmail contacts into googlewave, and as integrations between Wave
and other Google apps appear, users won't need to log in twice.

I appreciate that the Google account namespace can sometimes seem
pretty full, and it was fun to be able to pick a name in the
relatively clean wavesandbox.com namespace - I've enjoyed being
[email protected]!

However, there are still lots of great names out there. I suggest you
create a gmail account now, with a name that you're happy with
(something like betty.xlu, wave.at.betty, betty.in.wave, or
blue.sky.betty? I'm sure you and your friends could come up with
something much better), then send it an email invitation. When it
arrives, sign up the new account to wave and you're done.

You might also be interested to know that we have long-term ideas
about giving users lots of control over how their profile appears in
Wave. If you're happy for people to be able to find you, you'd be able
to make it easy for them to find you and start waving, no matter what
your user name. Once they started waving with you, they'd mostly see
your full name rather than your user name, so user names wouldn't be
as important. Still much work to do, though, and no guarantees as to
how (or if!) it will work out.

Cheers,

a
