I know everyone is scarred from the SOAP debacle, but I'm still surprised that there isn't a defacto web API schema by now. Seems like there have been quite a few attempts ([1] is nice), but it doesn't seem like one has ever become widely used. So instead each web API implementation is slightly one off, has different conventions (often differing even between it's own end points), and requires custom implementations.
