Yes, it works now. I had to (1) change my http server to serve on port 8888 and (2) change the url in the GWT browser window from http://localhost:8888 to http://localhost:8888/demo.html.
I don't know where I got the impression that I had to run in compile mode but thanks for setting me straight.
