Jennifer, Sounds like you're up against this issue:
http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/issues/detail?id=3510 There's a patch attached to comment #21 that has worked for many (including myself). You can also upgrade to 1.7.0, which includes the fix for issue #3510.
