Well ... this problem turned out to be a css issue, not a gwt issue. The submitButton was, in fact, there. But it was so far to the right of my screen I couldn't see it and didn't realize it was there. I just get faked out!
I have adjusted the css for positioning of the submitButton. I have it now so it is at an acceptable position and with not a huge difference between environments/browsers. There are differences between environments (Linux vs. Windows) as well as across browsers (FireFox vs IE, both on Windows). However, css positioning - and some other elements of functionality in css - have always seemed to me to deliver _approximate_ compatibility across browsers. I had not previously experienced compatibility issues across OS environments.
