Hi Lucas, certainly it was a joke. Speaking seriously I think that your experience in GWT imply your certain experience in Java. So you already know at least some Java, GWT and some other things you mentioned which is quite good. I am not sure how it is in USA but I think it is enough for start in any country. And as Jim told you should definitely have some command of understanding java script and DOM. Just search for any company doing projects on GWT and try to get into a team. They will learn you quickly whatever else you may need to know.
