So Christian... I get what you are saying and that is actually what you would do if you owned it all as one thing, I totally agree... I think that the showcase app is probably like that and I have no problem with it... Makes sense.
However in the iGoogle-esq example/question, those widgets are developed by different companies, or different parts of companies...They are created or updated all the time and whenever that happens, they need to be registered and immediately become available... Are you saying that you would recompile and redeploy the whole app every time this happens? Any other ideas?
