CSS was hard for me at first too, but now that I've gotten a good hang of it, I really prefer it to trying to do the styling in code. Especially with GWT's enhanced css capibilities (conditional styles based on user.agent/locale). Not to mention with tools like firebug, it is pretty quick to go through and debug and experiment with styles.
